Social media have become a pervasive means of interpersonal communication. The goal of this paper is to review the way in which social media are used in the emergency management field. The main thesis is that, despite the benefits of social media in emergency management, only social media policies can ensure that the information provided through them is credible and verified. One of the key reasons why social media have become a centerpiece of emergency management is because traditional communication channels no longer respond to the challenges presented in disaster situations.
